Is Fake Meat Actually Healthier than the real meat?
TL;DR: So… Is Fake Meat Healthier?
YES. According to my experience, mock meat is generally healthier than regular meat especially for heart health, cholesterol, inflammation, and metabolic conditions.
It’s not meant to replace whole plant foods like dals, beans, tofu, or millets, but as an occasional swap, it’s a smarter choice than meat.
And the main point being that you don’t have to give up taste to choose better.

What Counts as “Fake Meat” Anyway?
Fake meat / mock meat / PBMAs (plant-based meat alternatives) all mean the same thing. These are foods designed to feel the same (mouthfeel), taste almost the same, and appear similar to real meat like chicken, mutton, etc.
Why? What is the need, you may ask.
There can be a multitude of reasons whether it’s health, religion, personal choice, environmental care, care for animals (vegans), and many more.
These foods feel new to us, and clearly, we fear anything new. Honestly, fair enough.
But is there a real need to be afraid?
If I have to say it in one word: no.
Fake meat / mock meat / PBMAs (plant-based meat alternatives) are made using different ingredients and different processes, such as:
- TVP (textured vegetable protein) – In simple terms, soy chunks, granules, or dehydrated soy flour processed to make it chewy and meat-like.
- Seitan – Made from essential wheat gluten; known for its chewy, meat-like texture.
- Protein blends – Some are engineered using pea protein, fungi (mycoprotein), or algae proteins to mimic textures like burgers, nuggets, and pulled meats.
- Whole-food based options – Some are made from jackfruit (panasa) and mushrooms like oyster mushrooms and lion’s mane, among many other varieties.

Fake Meat vs Real Meat: The Health Comparison
If you ask me, I would say it depends on who is asking.
For example, if you are a person with diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, or high inflammation then yes, fake meat can be a better option for you.
It allows you to enjoy similar taste and texture while providing fiber, clean, high-quality plant-based protein, and zero dietary cholesterol, without saturated fat clogging the arteries.
If you are vegan, vegetarian, or avoiding meat for religious or environmental reasons then hell yes without any doubt or fear go ahead and enjoy it.
But if you are someone who eats meat or is non-vegetarian and ask me which option is better for you, as a dietitian, I would recommend slowly making the switch to plant-based or mock meat.
Why? Here’s a simple comparison to help you make an informed decision.

Why is there so much hate for mock meat ?
As I said, we fear anything new and understandably so.
Yes, mock meats or PBMAs are processed foods, and yes, you can’t eat them daily. But that doesn’t mean you should alienate them completely.
Mock meats are never meant to replace whole foods like chickpeas, tofu, soy, lentils, or millets. They are just a support for transitioning into better health.
It is popularly said that people with renal diseases or high sodium restrictions should avoid processed foods like these mock meats…
but how many are saying the same about chicken, which is one of the densest sources of sodium and is directly responsible for hypertension in many cases?
Don’t believe me? See the studies…
So… Should You Eat Fake Meat?
Again, food is a very sensitive topic for everyone, and it is a personal choice.
If the question is, are fake meats healthy for you?
My answer would be yes. They are healthier for you than regular meat, but not healthier than whole plant-based foods.
So, following a whole-food plant-based diet and eating mock meat twice or thrice a month is no big deal and overall healthier than a meat-based diet for your arteries and gut health.
Honestly, most of India consumes non-veg at this rate—once a week or mostly twice a week. So why not replace it with options that are more beneficial for your health, better for the planet, and kinder to animals?
Just give them a try. They’re not that bad.
